This work by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri AKA le Guercino, depicts Saint Sebastian, a third-century Roman martyr who has been depicted many times in the history of art, accompanied by his emblematic arrow on his torso.
The figure of Saint Sebastian is rich in meanings, which vary according to the period and context: Faith and courage, protection against epidemics, strength and youth, as well as the defence of soldiers and archers.
His representation in art, often highlighting his beauty and body, made him a figure of homoeroticism, particularly during the Renaissance.
Exhibited since 1924 in Moscow at the Pushkin Museum, illustrated by AKA Clothe and his essential crowns, he glorifies beauty and tolerance.
