Jean-Baptiste Poquelin AKA Molière was a French playwright and actor born on 15 January 1622 in Paris, and recognised as one of the leading authors of French comedy.
Despite a rocky start, he rose to fame with plays that are now part of our collective cultural heritage, including The Miser, Le Misanthrope, The Doctor in Spite of Himself, and many others.
His success was the fruit of his unrivalled talent, with a sharp sense of the mores of the time, thanks to a perceptive observation of human nature that blended social satire and comedy.
Molière was also an innovative actor and troupe director, incorporating elements of farce and character comedy into his plays, a legacy that lives on to this day.
