A tormented artist with a deep passion for painting, Van Gogh was a Dutch artist who was born in Groot Zundert in the Netherlands in 1853 and died in Auvers-sur-Oise in France in 1890, aged just 37.
Self-taught, he produced almost 35 self-portraits during his lifetime, partly to explore his identity and emotional state, as he was chronically mentally ill, but also out of necessity, as he could not afford to pay models.
Using a unique technique characterised by swirling, dynamic motifs, he is unusual in that, despite his immense talent, he sold only one work, Les Vignes Rouges (1890), during his lifetime.
